III. Treasurer's Report

The Treasurer's report will be given at the next meeting.

IV. Newsletter

Gordon Davis requested that all articles be submitted by October 17. Evelyn Hogg planned articles about prominent beekeepers, beginning with Oliver Collins.

V. Fall Meeting and Honey Show

The fall meeting and honey show will be held November 5 at the Maryland Department of Agriculture headquarters in Annapolis.

Tentative schedule:

11:00-12:30 — Honey show entries
12:30 — Opening remarks: David Morris
12:40 — Apiary Inspector's report: I. Barton Smith
1:00 — Seasonal management: Dr. Gordon Allen-Wardell
1:45 — BSA Merit Badge in Delaware: Jerry Caldwell
2:30 — Break
2:45 — School presentation: George Imirie
3:30 — School presentations: Harry Mallow
4:15 — Brewing with honey: Gordon Allen-Wardell
5:00 — Bee Bowl
5:30 — Potluck dinner

VI. Competitions

Two teams are needed for the Bee Bowl. The rules were open for debate until the competition; a rule sheet was attached.

The Board discussed an award plaque for the best association performance at the honey show. The estimated cost was $150-$700. The Board unanimously authorized David Morris to spend up to $200. The winner will be determined by points: three for first place, two for second, and one for third. The winner will hold the plaque for one year and return it at the following honey show. When all spaces on the plaque are filled, the association with the most yearly wins will keep it.

VII. Winter Meeting

The winter meeting is planned for January 28, 1995 at Oregon Ridge Nature Center. Tentative speakers were Paul Jackson, Texas Apiary Inspector and collector of antique smokers, and Gene Killion or Richard Taylor on comb honey.

VIII. MDA Open House

The MDA Open House was planned for March 18, 1994 at Maryland Department of Agriculture headquarters in Annapolis.

Gregory Ferris of Indian Head, Maryland, was organizing and running the event. A brochure promoting Maryland honey and pollination services would be distributed. Interested commercial beekeepers would fund the brochure, and honey sticks and beekeeping information would also be available. Arrangements were being made for the American Beekeeping Federation National Honey Queen to attend.

IX. Spring Meeting

The spring meeting was being planned for late April at Pultoxson Natural Research Center (place name as it appears in the scan). Speakers were being considered.

X. Summer Meeting

Volunteers were requested for programming and organizing. Suggestions were requested for a location, including overnight accommodations and dining. The meeting should be in the western part of the state because Salisbury had hosted the prior year's meeting. Organizing should be completed before the fall meeting. Suggested locations included Mount Saint Mary's College, Frostburg, and Westminster-Frederick.

XI. Fall Meeting and Honey Show

The following year's fall meeting and honey show was proposed for the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Possible dates were October 14, October 28, November 11, or November 18.

The event could be held jointly with the Arboretum, opened to the public, and published in the newsletter. Honey sales would be allowed if 20 percent of sales were donated to the Arboretum. George Ayers was suggested as a speaker on honey plants.

XII. Other Business

David Morris needed a volunteer to coordinate the Boy Scouts of America beekeeping merit-badge effort in Maryland. He had contacted the Capitol District and needed someone to continue the effort.

A fact sheet was proposed for the December Beeline, covering basic recipes for medications and sugar syrups, names of association presidents, and related information.

December 5 was set as the stuffing date for the December Beeline at the MDA offices. Volunteers were asked to contact B. Smith.

The Apiary Inspectors of America annual meeting would be held in Annapolis January 24-28. Barton Smith was invited to attend. Registration was $35, and the Association was asked whether it would sponsor the opening reception with a $200 donation. The vote passed unanimously.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture had developed an “AHB Management Plan/Action Plan for Stinging Insects.” B. Smith mailed a copy to each MSBA Board member on September 24, 1994. E. Miner said that more public education was needed.
