Howard County regulations: Wayne Esaias & Jerry Fischer
Jerry Fischer is getting copies of "Best Beekeeping Practices" established by states in the southeast US and states neighboring Maryland. Wayne would like us to have a document that suits small scale beekeepers in Maryland. Would like there to be both MSBA and a MDA documents.
A Howard County beekeeper, David Titman, is a lawyer and is providing pro bono advice to the beekeepers involved with the situation in Howard Country. Howard County has abated any penalties and gave the beekeepers until February to move the hives. The County Council board members have asked that a beekeeper file a petition to alter the law that is affecting beekeeping. If all went smoothly, the earliest any modification to the regulations could take affect would be in September, 2009.
If requested, Steve McDaniel will write a letter and speak at hearings in support of beekeeping.
Jerry Fischer has compiled a list of towns and jurisdictions that have restrictions on beekeeping.
Action: Jerry Fischer will provide the MSBA Secretary with the list of jurisdictions that have restrictions on beekeeping.

NEW BUSINESS:
National Organic Honey Standards:
Steve McDaniel reported that there is a proposal to modify the wording of the National Organic Standards for Honey to include honey bees under the regulations for livestock. Steve McDaniel and Marc Hoffman submitted letters against the proposed changes.
Consortium of National Capital Beekeepers:
MSBA has been an extended an invitation to become a charter member of a consortium of beekeeping organizations in the Capital area. The purpose of the consortium is to provide national level recognition and points of contact for persons interested, or involved, in beekeeping (business, research, environment, etc.) while visiting the capital area. It is intended to make it easier for persons visiting the area to contact local beekeepers. As a member of the consortium, MSBA might be asked to help sponsor professional meetings and pay for modest expenses such as light refreshments. The benefits of the consortium would be greater visibility for beekeeping and MSBA, access to more experts in beekeeping and related topics, and build relationships with beekeepers and organizations beyond Maryland.
Motion for MSBA to join the Consortium of National Capital Beekeepers was passed by unanimous voice vote.
Future MSBA Board meetings dates are:
