Twitter account to be set up by Cheryl Evry.

Facebook account being researched by Cheryl Evry.

Advanced Beekeeping Committee - Pat Haskell

Secretary's note: The topic of MSBA's role in providing advanced beekeeping instructional materials or courses is worthy of its own meeting.

Pat Haskell reports that the committee would like to commit to an intermediate/advanced set of beekeeping courses.

It was suggested that she talk to Dave Papke and/or the Sustainable Bees folks, who already teach. It was noted that EAS Master Beekeeper training focuses on teaching rather than specifics of advanced beekeeping.

After much discussion, it was suggested that the committee look into putting together a teaching curriculum to possibly replace the June 2011 MSBA meeting, using the space at the University of Maryland. The committee will see what speakers are available and report back. It was suggested that this could become a two-day event.

Continuing Business

T-Shirt/Other Club Awareness Items - looking for one volunteer to coordinate. More than one welcome. - No interest this meeting.

Maryland Honey Festival - September 19, 2010 - Steve McDaniel
Flyers were distributed, to be posted where ever possible. These flyers were also emailed to all officers. Volunteers are still needed, please contact Steve for details.
Moved to reimburse Toni for last year's banner. This motion accepted by unanimous voice vote.

ETO chamber progress - Toni Burnham
No Progress.

Advertising rates in The Beeline - set in 2000 - raise them?
The motion was made to leave the rates at the $10/$15/$27.50 price point for commercial ads. This motion accepted by unanimous voice vote.

How many times can a member advertise before they are considered “commercial”?
As long as a member is only not advertising multiples of the same item, he or she may place as many ads as desired. For example: If he or she is manufacturing one type of item, that is commercial. If they are selling some old or unused equipment, that is a free member ad.

Revise number of meetings back down to 3 per year? Board, General, or Both?

After much discussion, this item was tabled. However, as seen above, the action was given to the Advanced Beekeeping Committee to research setting up the June meeting as a special set of courses, possibly even a weekend long event.

New Business

Nomination of new EAS representative - any volunteers?
Janet Bardzik volunteered, on the condition that if the travel becomes too expensive, she will need to resign. The motion was made to nominate and elect her to be the MSBA EAS representative. This motion accepted by unanimous voice vote. Thank you, Janet, and Congratulations!

Discuss possible changes to premiums for shows
Moved to leave the premiums as they are, at least for another year. This motion accepted by unanimous voice vote.

Bob,
I have received a letter (intended for the Treasurer) which I will put into the post to you in the morning.
Basically the MD Ag Fair Board has had deep cuts to its budgets and funding, so most fairs and shows are getting 25% less than last year.
The contract is included in the letter (with your name and address on it!) and it is for $750.
I guess we will need to raise this at the upcoming Board meeting to see if we should make changes to the premiums etc for this year’s show as a result.
Trust you are well.
Regards,
JB

Banned Bees! - MSBA's role in this

just received the unfortunate and unexpected e-mail stating that the zoning administrator of Frederick County has ruled that bees are farm animals and as such cannot be kept on residential property of less than 3 acres. Even on 3 acres hives have to be set back 50 feet from the property line.

I called the zoning planner (Rick Brace) right after I received this message and he did not know when this ruling was made. He said that if we want to challenge this ruling or have further discussion on its implications then someone should "reply to all" to his message and suggest next steps, etc.
