Reports by the Officers
President – Allen Hayes: The items presented have been divided throughout these minutes in their respective categories.
Treasurer - Robert Crouse: Bob reported that we now have 801 members down from this time last year. Bob would like some help with the way PayPal is administered. Martin Posse offered to assist. For the Treasurers’ financial report, see attached.
Secretary & Editor – Toni Burnham, Absent
Vice-President – Jim Fraser reported that he still needs a Keynote speaker for the June 17 meeting. The rest of the presenters are in place. He has looked at different venues for future meetings. One possibility for the February meeting is UMBC in Catonsville. A site visit needs to be made. Our cost would be about $500.00 and there is a separate area suitable for vendors. Jamie Ellis is a possible keynote speaker for our fall meeting this year, but he has not yet confirmed.
EAS Report – Tim McMahon absent.

Upcoming Programs

Summer Meeting: June 17, Biosciences Research Building at U of Md, College Park.
Fall Meeting and Honey Show: November 4. MDA Annapolis

Old Business

MSBA Membership update – See Treasurer’s report.
ETO Chamber – Toni Burnham reported to Allen Hayes prior to the meeting that she has had very successful meetings with the staff at MDA and she feels that approval for us to have a licensed applicator use ETO will be coming soon.
Status of donations to Frazier/Well Being app. It is up, running and can be found at http://www.thebeemd.com.

HB 177: Bee / Black Bear Bill: This passed the general assembly 124-17. It has been amended such that the beekeeper must have an electric fence around their apiary and can only shoot a bear if said bear has breached the fence. Governor Hogan is expected to sign the bill on May 25, 2017 with it becoming law on June 1, 2017.
MSBA Web Site Updates: There are presently 2 ways to pay via PayPal for membership, Bob Crouse would like this reduced to one way to make things simpler.

New Business
Replacing weathered License Plates. This concerns if MSBA should charge a member a second time for getting replacement plates. No one felt that we should do this since they paid us once already. A member wishing to replace worn plates will be charged a fee by the State MVA.
Honey Harvest Festival: Saturday Sept 16, Brookside Nature Center and Gardens. Marc Hoffman reports that he has met with the Brookside staff and things are underway for this event to be held at their facility again this year. MSBA will provide lunch for members volunteering at the event. It was noted that BUMBA helped with the extracting demo and that Carl Guerci is one of the people who volunteered in past years. Marc is asking for help on the day of the event. Frames of honey for extracting are needed.

MSBA Staffing Bee Booth at Maryland State Fair: Wednesday August 30. Allen Hayes to take the lead on this soliciting volunteers to staff the booth in three shifts from noon until 10:00 PM. Volunteers will be provided a free pass to the fair. MSBA will get 1/11 of the profit generated by honey sales during the fair for staffing the booth this one day.
MSBA has been asked to support planting for pollinators at solar sites. This is a national movement, not to be confused with any Maryland State legislative activity. Everyone felt we should support this activity but not contribute any money to it.

A motion to adjourn was made by Clyde Strang and seconded by Bob Crouse, the motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:12 PM.

Next Board Meeting: (Suggested) Friday, October 13, 2017.
