Valerie Wampler, EAS Certified Master Beekeeper, is a lifelong gardener and ADS Senior Dahlia Judge who fell into beekeeping in 2016 thanks to a dahlia obsession. Currently the Secretary of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association, Valerie teaches throughout Maryland and leads the "Yard Bees" apiary program at the Howard County Detention Center. A passionate advocate for pollinator education, she is also a prolific maker who incorporates hive products into her work as a spinner, weaver, quilter, and soap maker. Valerie has curated an amazing online COOK BOOK for using LOCAL HONEY. You should explore it in advance of her presentation so you can ask questions. "Beekeeping with John Benham"

John Benham has been keeping bees over twenty-five years and rearing his own queens from locally caught survivor stock for more than twenty of those years. He is an Eastern Apiculture Society Certified Master Beekeeper and EAS Master Beekeeper examiner. He served as the 2015 president of the Kentucky State Beekeepers and was the 2015 Beekeeper of The Year. He has served as an officer in numerous local, state and national associations. He considers his speaking to various beekeeping groups in numerous states across the US a humbling honor and extremely valuable in his on-going education about honey bees, always using the unknown quote, "If a beekeeper tells you he knows what he's doing, be wary and keep a keen eye on this fellow, for he has already told one lie, and no doubt will tell you another."

"Plan to Succeed: Making a Personalized Action Plan"

An action plan is a structured strategy that pinpoints steps, tasks, and resources vital to turning a goal into reality. Successful beekeepers all develop a system for handling their bees throughout the year. We will walk through how to set goals for your beekeeping journey, creating a calendar of important dates, and developing your own monthly beekeeping plan.  Although all beekeeping is local, you should be able to set up the framework for creating success with your own beekeeping regardless of where you live.

SPEAKER: Kim Mehalick is a retired engineer and now full-time beekeeper. Kim is an EAS Master Beekeeper. She is the past President of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association (MSBA) and is active in the Bowie Upper Marlboro Beekeepers Association (BUMBA) as mentoring program lead and manager of the teaching apiary) and the DC Beekeepers Alliance (education committee). She regularly teaches in short courses on a variety of topics.

Kim has worked to increase education opportunities within MSBA, and developed the popular nucs and splits class. She was the driving force behind the Beekeeping Year 2 and Beyond ten session class, which became a reality once Mike Mehalick and Allen Storm joined the development/teaching team. They won the MSBA George Imirie Award for Education excellence in Nov 2023. Her favorite part of beekeeping, after mentoring new beekeepers, is making queens through a variety of backyard beekeeper methods. Sharing the wonder of opening a hive, and discovering how the bees
think is a wonderful thing to do.

Kim and Mike Mehalick keep about 80 hives on their property and various outyards as part of their “The Queen’s Honey” apiary. They run primarily medium equipment and sell nucs each spring. Since 2013, they have also sold hive products from their company Clean Bee Soapworks including honey, bees, soap, lotions, bath bombs and lip balms.

The 2026 EAS Conference was held in Shepherdsville, Kentucky.

The 2027 EAS Conference is expected to be held in Plainfield, Indiana (in the Indianapolis area) from July 25–30, 2027
