2020 Feb 14th ~ Kim Flottum SPECIAL SESSIONS

MSBA is pleased to announce 2 additional opportunities to hear our keynote speaker, KIM FLOTTUM!

In ADDITION to speaking at our SATURDAY Feb 15th club meeting, (CLICK HERE for those details) KIM FLOTTUM, former editor of Bee Culture,  will be giving two special lectures on FRIDAY, Feb 14, 2020. By having 4 lectures in 3 locations, over two days, we want to give all Maryland beekeepers a chance to hear KIM FLOTTUM. For each Friday talk, a $5 donation to MSBA is suggested.

LOCATION #1 Friday, FEB 14

  • DAY: Friday, Feb. 14
  • TIME: 1:15 pm - 3:00 pm
  • LOCATION: University of Maryland, Susquehanna Hall room 1120 (CLICK HERE for interactive google map and driving directions)
  • TOPIC: 10 Rules for modern beekeeping
  • DESCRIPTION: Queens, genetics, pests, swarming, room, food, wintering well, and more. Bees are livestock, and this is about animal husbandry.
  • $5 suggested donation to MSBA
  • DIRECTIONS: Susquehanna Hall (room 1120) is on the SOUTH end of campus.  From Route 1 heading south, turn left on Knox road, left on Perinkert Drive, and right on Lehigh Rd.  Susquehanna is the second building on the left. Paid parking behind it. (additional paid parking at the Mowatt visitor lot. )

  • TOPIC: Second Season and Beyond
  • $5 suggested donation to MSBA
  • DESCRIPTION: Ok, they made it through their first winter out back. Now What. Management tasks for the rest of this winter, how do the bees you have winter? Emergency feeding, early exams, spring build-up according to what your bees normally do, fixing problems, queen performance, swarming, IPM, what’s on the menu, the honey flow part 1, 2 and 3, , harvesting, more IPM, and winter again.

KIM FLOTTUM BIO

Kim Flottum was Editor of Bee Culture Magazine for 33+ years. He started a second magazine called Beekeeping Your First Three Years about 6 years ago for the huge flush of new beekeepers answering the call of helping the bees. He’s written 5 books, ranging from beginner to advanced to producing varietal honey to actually how to do honey tasting with Marina Marchese, and his last is In Business With Bees. He is past President of The Connecticut State Beekeepers Association, The Ohio State Beekeepers Association, and has served as Director, and Chairman of the Board of the Eastern Apiculture Society. Kim and his wife Kathy, who is Associate Editor and Graphic Design Specialist for Bee Culture, live in Northeast Ohio with their cats, chickens, ducks and gardens. After retiring at the end of 2019, Kim ramped up his Agricultural Podcast Production Company, called Growing Planet Media, so he hasn’t slowed down a lot, but he does get to sleep in once on occasion.
